A debate, large number project and zombies?

Bonjour!
I hope that you have been enjoying our beautiful fall weather.  This Friday, October 27th, our class will be the site of a debate (en francais!) about a hypothetical dam to be built on the Big East River.  Three groups will be presenting arguments for the construction of a dam and three groups will be arguing that it shouldn't be built.  Students representing the Town of Huntsville will make the ultimate decision.  Supporting the construction of the dam will be groups representing Hydro, landowners whose homes are flooded every year on the Big East River and a local marina, that hopes to sell boats and sports equipment to people who could make use of the lake created by the construction of the dam.
Against the proposal will be the Muskoka Conservancy, Algonquin Outfitters and a group of kayakers (who also organise the Muskoka River X).  Your child may be looking for some basic costume ideas for the debate.  We will let you know how it turns out!
Also, please see below for the Large Number Math Project that students will be completing for next Monday, October 30th.  Students will be given time in class to work on this project this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Large Numbers in the Real World
                                       Due: Monday, October 30, 2017
                                       Name: _________________________

Choose a number up to 10 000 (Gr. 4) that represents something in the real world. (For example, a humpback whale’s song travels 1,550 meters through the water.)
Represent the number in at least three ways. Two ways must be through a place value chart and on a number line.
Create a small poster that shows different ways to represent the number. Don’t forget to include the fact that includes the large number!
Other ways to represent numbers:
  • -  In words
  • -  In expanded form (ex. 2,462 = 2,000 + 400 + 60 + 2)
  • -  In expanded form with words (ex. 2,462 = 2 thousands + 4 hundreds + 6 tens + 2)
  • -  In $ (money)
  • -  In a place value chart with exchanges (i.e. breaking the number down in different ways)
Here is how your work will be evaluated:
    Level
4(A): the number is represented in more than three ways number is placed on a number line with accuracy
    number
     is represented in creative ways
Level 3(B): the number is represented in three ways
    number
is placed on a number line with considerable accuracy
Level 2/C: the number is represented in less than three ways number is placed on a number line with some accuracy
Level 1(D): the number is represented in less than three ways and is inaccurately placed on a number line

Finally, I am hoping to offer the kids in our class a 'zombie' run on the Hunter's Bay trail for Hallowe'en this upcoming Tuesday, October 31st in the morning.  (Don't worry ... no real zombies ... just kids trying to take off the flag football flags from runners on the trail).  A parent volunteer is needed in order for this to happen.  Please e-mail me or send me a note via your child's agenda if you are able to help.
    A bientot!  Mme Lindsay
